On August 11, 2025, the National Unity Platform (NUP) launched efforts to secure the release of its detained members following the Supreme Court’s January 31 ruling that nullified the trial of civilians in military courts. NUP lawyers are filing applications for mandatory bail, arguing that many detainees have exceeded the legal 180-day remand period without trial. They assert that courts can release such individuals even without formal applications. One notable case is that of Anthony Agaba (aka Bobi Young), who has spent nearly a year in detention without trial. His application for mandatory bail was recently heard, but the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has yet to respond. A ruling is expected on August 22. NUP lawyers consider the continued imprisonment of their members a violation of their rights and are determined to pursue all legal avenues for their release.
